Born into the Ota family, his given name was Shigenobu. He studied in Edo under Kano Yasunobu, head of the main Kano school, and was later granted permission to use the Kano surname in recognition of his artistic ability. He subsequently served Matsudaira Tsunataka, the second lord of the Matsue domain.
