Kunio Makino (1925-1986)
Born in Tokyo in 1925. Inspired by Van Gogh and Rembrandt, he aspired to be a painter. He studied oil painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, but was drafted into the military in 1945 and the war ended in Kyushu. After the war, he graduated from the school in 1948. He was selected for the Yasui Prize New Artists Exhibition in 1962 and 1965. He left behind realistic portraits using his sophisticated oil painting techniques. He passed away in 1986 at the age of 61.
In the postwar art world, where abstract painting was very popular, he did not belong to any art association and only held one solo exhibition every few years. As a result, he was not well known despite his talent, but after his death, he gained recognition through retrospectives and television programs, and he began to be reevaluated.
