Ōbayashi Chimaki was a Japanese-style painter active from the Taishō to the Shōwa period, best known for his bijinga (pictures of beauties) and genre scenes depicting everyday life and dress in Edo. Working primarily within the framework of the revived Inten exhibitions, he developed a “densely crafted” approach to bijinga, combining a soft, refined portrayal of women with careful historical research and period detail. The appeal of his paintings lies in the clarity and elegance of his line—especially in facial features and hands—his meticulous rendering of kimono patterns and textures within a subdued palette, and his assured compositions that use negative space to create a quiet, contemplative atmosphere.
