Ikeda Yōson was a modern Japanese-style painter who placed travel and on-site sketching at the heart of his practice, continually renewing his expression across the prewar and postwar periods. Often described as a “wandering painter” for his love of journeying, he developed a distinctive landscape idiom through his work on celebrated-place imagery derived from sketches made throughout Japan, as well as through panoramic, bird’s-eye viewpoints and a bright, lucid sense of color. His paintings do more than record what he saw; by employing elevated perspectives and bold simplification, he brings the “outline of a place”—its local character and terrain—into sharp relief. Rather than simply setting down a scene as it appeared, his works seem to fix the very experience of time spent walking within the landscape. He was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 1984 and received the Order of Culture in 1987.
