Otto Wols was one of the leading German avant-garde artists of the 20th century. Active as a painter, printmaker, and photographer, he had a profound influence on postwar European art. His distinctive style, characterized by free, organic linework and spontaneous expression, is regarded as a precursor to Art Informel.

The title Les Fous translates as "The Madmen" or "The Insane." In this work, abstract forms suggesting human figures and living creatures are rendered with delicate lines and subtle colors, creating a poetic and imaginative composition that is characteristic of Wols' unique artistic vision.
