François-Raoul Larche was one of the leading French sculptors of the late nineteenth century. After studying at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, he continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts, and from 1884 to around 1911 he exhibited regularly at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. His work embodies the elegance and vitality of Art Nouveau, while earning acclaim for exceptional craftsmanship and a keen attention to detail.

Particularly striking is his Art Nouveau sensibility in the female figure, and the beauty of lines in which flowing drapery unfolds with a whirl-like momentum. Above all, the Loïe Fuller lamp and small-sculpture series—conceived in response to the American dancer Loïe Fuller—stands as his signature. Larche transformed the sweeping motion of fabric in the Serpentine Dance into rippling bronze forms, integrating the lighting mechanism into the sculpture itself: the light source recedes into the depths of the “waves” of cloth, while the wiring is ingeniously concealed within the figure. The result is a captivating impression, as if light itself were breathing from within the sculpture.
