He was one of the leading literati painters and Confucian scholars of the late Edo period. Having deeply studied the theory and spirit of Chinese literati painting, he brought to fruition in Japan a highly cultivated pictorial world in which poetry, calligraphy, and painting are conceived as a unified whole. He maintained close exchanges with contemporary intellectuals such as Watanabe Kazan and showed an informed understanding of Western techniques and observational drawing; yet his true distinction lies in the way he absorbed these elements without foregrounding them, integrating them instead into the core ethos of literati painting. His works continue to be collected and studied by major institutions, including the Tokyo National Museum, and some examples have been designated Important Cultural Properties.
