Toshimitsu Imai was one of Japan's leading postwar abstract painters. After moving to France in the 1950s, he became involved in the Art Informel movement, gaining international recognition for his dynamic brushwork and richly textured surfaces. He later developed his own distinctive abstract style while working between Japan and Paris, incorporating the spirit of Japanese calligraphy and Eastern aesthetics. His works are held in numerous museum collections in Japan and abroad, securing his place as an important figure in the history of contemporary art.
