A hanging scroll by Gyokkei Mochizuki depicting a white fox standing quietly on a spring evening. The delicate rendering of its white fur against the pale background enhances the animal’s pure and mysterious presence. In Japan, the white fox has long been regarded as a messenger of the Inari deity and is also considered an auspicious subject.

Gyokkei Mochizuki was born into the Mochizuki family of Kyoto, whose members had served as official painters since the Edo period. He studied under his father, the Japanese-style painter Gyokusen Mochizuki. His work combined the meticulous brushwork of the Mochizuki school with the gentle naturalism of the Maruyama-Shijo tradition, and he was especially accomplished in bird-and-flower painting. Active in organizations including the Japan Art Association and the Japan Painting Society, he produced many refined works from the Meiji era through the early Showa period.
