Kunio Makino
Tokyo, 1925–1986
Kunio Makino was a Western-style painter who pursued a unique form of realism throughout the Showa era. Although he studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, he chose not to align himself with any specific art group, instead presenting his work mainly through solo exhibitions. Deeply inspired by Rembrandt, Makino mastered classical techniques of realism, creating works that convey a quiet yet powerful presence. Few of his pieces are held in museum collections; many have been cherished in private hands. His meticulous brushwork and singular aesthetic continue to captivate viewers to this day.
