Makoto Masuda

Makoto Masuda (1920–1989) was a Japanese painter born in Yamanashi Prefecture. Active in both Japan and France after World War II, he is particularly known for his paintings depicting the streets of Paris and scenes of everyday life. He developed an interest in painting at an early age and moved to France in 1957, where he continued his artistic career in Paris for approximately 30 years.

In France, Masuda received considerable recognition, winning the Grand Prix at the Cherbourg International Exhibition in 1960 and a gold medal at Le Salon, organized by the Société des Artistes Français, in 1965. He frequently depicted Parisian streets, cafés, restaurants, markets, and the people who inhabited these lively urban settings, capturing everyday life in France from his own distinctive perspective.

Masuda's paintings are characterized by bold, expressive outlines, simplified forms, and vibrant colors. His compositions, which often portray buildings and figures through geometric shapes, sometimes evoke elements of Cubism. At the same time, his depictions of people walking through the streets or relaxing in cafés convey warmth and humor, capturing ordinary moments of daily life.

After returning to Japan, Masuda continued painting until his death in 1989. His works are held in collections including the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art, which organized a special exhibition dedicated to him in 2012. The Makoto Masuda Museum of Art in Tsuru, Yamanashi Prefecture, his hometown, also preserves and exhibits his artistic legacy.
