Makoto Masuda was a Western-style painter from Yamanashi Prefecture who moved to Paris after the war and remained based there for many years, steadily building recognition within the French art world’s exhibition system. He is widely known for his lively depictions of working-class neighborhoods—street corners and everyday human activity—captured with bright color and a light, agile touch. His particular strength lies in drawing out the quiet charm of ordinary scenes through a warm, attentive gaze. Masuda received multiple awards abroad and established a firm footing through memberships in several salons, notably the Salon d’Automne. In his later years he returned to Japan and turned his attention to views of Mt. Fuji, leaving behind an enduring reputation also tied to local memory, including being honored as an honorary citizen of Tsuru City in his home region.
