Kōtōshi Kontani was a Japanese-style painter born in Kanazawa in 1890 (Meiji 23). He initially focused mainly on bird-and-flower paintings, but after moving to Kyoto he shifted his emphasis to figure painting, producing many bijinga (portraits of beauties) rich in poetic charm. He was first accepted into the government-sponsored Bunten exhibition at its 9th edition in 1915 (Taishō 4). After returning to Kanazawa in 1917 (Taishō 6), he continued to exhibit primarily through the Kinjō Gadan exhibitions, and also served in official capacities such as an organizer and juror.
