Shōji Hamada is a Nihonga painter who built his reputation within the Nitten exhibition system, known for landscapes that densely contain a palpable sense of “great nature” within an atmosphere of stillness. The appeal of his work lies in the way it is grounded in realism yet goes beyond mere sketching from life, reorganizing scenery into an “inner landscape” that has settled within the artist’s mind. Through subtle gradations he differentiates humidity in the air and shifting light, and with compositions that do not overstate, he allows the presence of water surfaces and trees to emerge slowly and calmly.
Not flashy—but best appreciated with time and close looking.
