Agustín Cárdenas was one of the leading Latin American sculptors who established an international presence in postwar Paris. He is often discussed as part of the “last generation capable of resonating with the spirit of Surrealism”: through highly condensed organic forms and compositions marked by a totem-like verticality, he crystallized associations of the body, nature, and dream into silent yet powerfully charged volumes. It is also well known that André Breton, a central figure of Surrealism, spoke with admiration of Cárdenas’s creative “hand.” Cárdenas’s position within the context of European modern art is affirmed by the Centre Pompidou’s holdings and sustained research, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, likewise documents and presents his artist profile and exhibition history—making him a significant node for understanding the twentieth century’s transatlantic networks of modernism.
