André Cottavoz was a painter and printmaker who did not “revive” postwar figuration through moderation, but reinvented it through an intensified, bodily form of making. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and often situated within the context of the “Lyon New Figuration,” his work ultimately exceeds any single theory or style. It unfolds as a practice that pushes the act of painting itself to its limits.
In Cottavoz’s canvases, paint is not simply applied as color; it is treated as matter—piled up with a knife, pressed, scraped away, and driven back into the surface again and again. The resulting strata record cycles of destruction and reconstruction, granting the image a sculptural weight and palpable resistance. Figures, still lifes, and landscapes do not appear as protected motifs, but as presences that rise only by surviving repeated assault; they do not drift toward abstraction so much as remain perpetually torn at the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Light and color, in turn, are not airy effects but pressures that seep outward from within dense paint and hold their ground on the surface.
Awarded the Prix Fénéon in 1953 and represented in public collections including the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris, Cottavoz stands as a key reference point for understanding how figuration could be reinvented under the pressures of modernism.
