Horst Antes is an indispensable painter and sculptor in discussions of postwar German “New Figuration” (Neue Figuration). Trained at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, he established around 1960 his distinctive “Kopffüßler” figures—human forms reduced to head and feet, with the torso omitted—forming a highly recognizable personal idiom. Antes’s images, marked by sharply cut contours, flat color fields that cling to the surface, and mask-like faces, do not “describe” the figure so much as compress it into a sign, generating a charged tension in which intimacy and unease coexist. It is precisely this subtle sensation—the slow, almost imperceptible shifting of the boundary between figuration and abstraction—that defines Antes’s work.
