Title: Charles II and his courtier
Artist:Andrew McCALLUM (Br.1821-1902)
Media: Oil on Canvas
Size: 57.8×76cm / Frame 73.5 × 91cm

This work is an exceptional piece by Andrew McCALLUM, an artist primarily known as a landscape painter. In terms of subject matter, it takes on a historical-painting theme, depicting King Charles II of England in the seventeenth century together with figures from his court.
In the nineteenth century, “costume pictures”—genre scenes with a historical flavor featuring seventeenth-century kings, nobles, and knights—became especially popular. Rather than strict historical accuracy, these works were often appreciated for their storytelling, costumes, and atmosphere.

As an aside, coins of Charles II (such as silver crowns and shillings, as well as gold guineas) are also highly sought after among antique coin collectors.
