Sydney Richard Williams Percy was a Victorian British landscape painter, associated with the well-known “Williams family” of artists, and often regarded as the most successful among the brothers. The appeal of his work lies in the way he captures the natural scenery of Wales and Scotland with a Romantic sensibility, while subtly weaving in everyday signs of rural life—grazing cattle, farm tracks, and waterside details. Working with a restrained palette of earthy tones and soft greens, he carefully calibrates light and atmosphere, and builds a strong sense of depth through distant mountain ranges and layered clouds. His handling of rocky ground and stone is particularly assured, lending his landscapes a quiet solidity and allowing a “silent drama” to emerge in the fleeting changes of weather within an otherwise pastoral calm.
His works are held in a number of public collections, including those in London (the Royal Collection and Tate), Cardiff (National Museum Wales), and museums in Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, and elsewhere.
