István Pekáry was one of the key figures in twentieth-century Hungarian art, celebrated for achieving a refined synthesis of modern sensibility and an enduring sense of plainness. Trained at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts under Gyula Rudnay and later supported by a state scholarship for advanced study in Rome, he nevertheless chose to reshape his visual language through a form of “conscious naiveté.” Rooted in folk traditions yet unmistakably modern, his work weaves fairytale-like imagination and bold, intuitive color into a contemporary framework, resulting in an unmistakable tone that remains heartfelt and unpretentious without tipping into sentimentality. His influence is also evident in the breadth of his practice and in institutional recognition: beyond painting, he was active in printmaking and the applied arts, producing designs for gobelin tapestries, stage and costume design, murals, and more, and he was awarded one of Hungary’s major national artistic honors, the Munkácsy Prize.
