Kikkawa Reika was a Nihonga painter who, in the late Meiji and Taishō periods, forged a distinctive territory in the Japanese painting world by making “line” his principal strength. While learning from ukiyo-e and the Kanō school, he also deeply admired the revivalist Yamato-e tradition. Supported by broad knowledge of East Asian classical culture, he developed a lucid and elegant style centered on flowing, delicate linework. In particular, in his monochrome line drawings with light color (hakubyō tansai), he places less emphasis on dense detailing than on the refinement and rhythm of the line itself, conveying the “presence” of figures and narratives while allowing the quiet of negative space to complete the image. He often chose subjects drawn from Chinese poetry and tales, lending his works an intellectual, elevated atmosphere that remains one of his defining characteristics.
