Kawabe Mitate was a painter of historical and narrative subjects who played an important role in the early formation of modern Yamato-e from the late Edo into the Meiji period. The distinctive appeal of his work lies in how he builds on the Tosa-school Yamato-e tradition while visualizing “narrative accuracy”—grounded in National Learning (kokugaku) and courtly precedents (yūsoku kojitsu)—with refined linework and clear, luminous color. His paintings invite viewers into an experience that feels like “reading a story” in front of the image, creating a compelling sense of immersion.
