Toshimitsu Imai
Kyoto Prefecture 1928-2002

Toshimitsu Imai was one of Japan’s leading abstract painters in the postwar era. In the 1950s, he moved to France and took part in the Art Informel movement. With his dynamic brushwork and powerful textures, he gained international recognition. Later, dividing his time between Japan and Paris, he developed a unique abstract style that embraced the spirit of calligraphy and Eastern aesthetics. His works are housed in many museums in Japan and abroad, securing his place as a significant figure in the history of contemporary art.
