Kōkyō Hatanaka is a Nihonga (Japanese-style) painter who has made Buddhism one of his central themes, and has continually conducted field research on the cultures, landscapes, and people of India and the Himalayan region. Drawing on these experiences, he creates works that are distinctly “of the present” while employing traditional Nihonga materials and techniques.
One of the clearest characteristics of his work is his firm awareness of painting as a flat surface rather than an illusionistic space. Making full use of crisp lines and the luminous colors of mineral pigments, he layers planes of color to achieve a quiet yet compelling strength.
