Exhibit at Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art TOKYO “Courbet and the sea: Eyes on Nature in the 19th Century” 10 April - 13 June 2021 No.55 / “This work depicts a sailing ship desperately enduring the rough waves of romanticism. The remains of a shipwreck are depicted in the foreground on the left, while a ship sailing on a calm sea can be seen in the distance. These seem to refer to the divided destiny of the sailing ship in the middle ground. The light shining on the waves has the effect of dramatically lighting the stage rather than observing the actual scene. Henriette Gudin is the daughter of Théodore Gudin, a master of the seascape genre. Henriette, who was taught by her father, also adheres to the patterns of traditional seascape painting and actively uses light effects that appeal to the viewer. (From catalogue p.94)
